Background of the Study
Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) was established by the Nigerian government to provide financial assistance for the development of public higher education institutions in Nigeria. The fund aims to address the significant financial gaps in universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education, ensuring that these institutions can provide quality education and enhance their research capacities (Afolabi & Alabi, 2024). TETFund has been instrumental in funding infrastructure development, capacity building, and academic research in Nigerian universities.
The Federal University of Technology, Minna, like many other Nigerian universities, has faced considerable financial challenges. These challenges, which include inadequate funding from the government, insufficient infrastructure, and the rising cost of education, often undermine the ability of the institution to achieve its educational and research goals. However, TETFund has played a critical role in addressing some of these financial gaps by providing grants and financial support for infrastructural development and academic programs.
This study will examine the role of TETFund in addressing financial gaps at the Federal University of Technology, Minna, focusing on how the fund has supported the university in overcoming financial constraints and improving its educational offerings.
Statement of the Problem
The financial challenges faced by Nigerian universities, including the Federal University of Technology, Minna, have hindered their ability to provide quality education and carry out meaningful research. Despite government support, these institutions often lack the resources necessary for effective teaching, learning, and infrastructure development. TETFund was established to bridge these gaps, yet there is a need to assess the extent to which it has been able to achieve its objectives in specific institutions like the Federal University of Technology, Minna.
There is limited research evaluating the impact of TETFund’s financial support in addressing the financial gaps in Nigerian universities, particularly in the context of Federal University of Technology, Minna. This study aims to fill this gap by assessing the role of TETFund in the university’s development and financial management.
